FIBA Africa President Hamane Niang has called for African nations to build on their success at the recent FIBA Women’s World Cup in Spain.

He made the call after Nigeria and Senegal participated in the world competition which had Nigeria make history becoming the first African nation to make the quarterfinals.

African Champions Nigeria recorded three straight wins over Turkey-ranked 10th in the world, Greece and Argentina before falling to USA in the quarterfinals.

Though Senegal failed to make the quarters, it beat highly fancied Latvia 70-69 to kick the European nation out of the World Cup.

The duo’s improved form was reflected in the world rankings released after the tournament which had Senegal in 17th place and Nigeria in 19th place.

Speaking to FIBA.com, Niang said, “For Nigeria and Senegal to prove themselves to be evenly matched with these teams is a source of great happiness for us. We’re convinced that what has happened in Tenerife is historic”.

USA won the World Cup with Australia and host Spain coming second and third respectively.
