Golden Star Resources is fulfilling its promise to make Prestea a basketball setting and not illegal mining as Corporate Affairs Manager Gerard Boakye opined in an interview by constructing two basketball courts in Ghana’s Western Regional mining town.
The mining firm recently funded the construction of the playing surfaces complete as part of its partnership with Giants of Africa (GOA) Camp.
This is the third camp held by the Not for Profit organization in Ghana but the first taking place outside the West African nation’s capital, Accra.
Prestea has in recent years, been closely associated with illegal mining popularly known in Ghana as “galamsey” that has led to land and water pollution in many parts of the country.
However, Golden Star Resources is working towards changing that by teaming up with GOA to provide world class basketball training to young players in Ghana.
“We hope to make Prestea a basketball setting and bring more eyes on Prestea not galamsey” Boakye said on basketball program “Courtside” which airs on Kwese Free Sports.
This year’s Camp has 54 young players participating.
