President of basketball’s world governing body FIBA –Horacio Muratore has described the just ended Women’s World Cup in Spain as an “extraordinary competition”.

He made the statement in a press conference after the event’s final game which had USA successfully defend its title beating Australia 73-56.

The title is America’s 10th in 11 final appearances and qualifies them to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan and in line for another title defense.

According to FIBA.com, President Muratore expressed his satisfaction about the organization of host Spain and the level of competition:

“It’s been an extraordinary competition. I’m very happy. Spain is one of the countries that has grown the most in women’s sports and which develops the program ‘Universo Mujer’ (Women’s Universe), which many companies have made use of. This Women’s World Cup has been incredible, with a huge following on TV and across social media networks. We knew the organizational capacity of the Spanish Committee…This tournament is the prelude to a new era for women’s basketball”.

Africa’s representatives Nigeria and Senegal ended the competition ranked eighth and 12th respectively.
