Nigeria and Senegal-Africa’s representatives at the ongoing FIBA Women’s World Cup- experienced mixed results prior to the knockout stage.

Nigeria piped Greece 57-56 to secure a place in the quarterfinals for the first time in the competition’s history; this year’s World Cup is taking place in Tenerife, Spain.

African Champions Nigeria needed to beat Greece to progress after clinching two wins in Group B against Argentina and Turkey.

Evelyn Akhator starred for D’Tigress as she registered 14 points and 13 rebounds with seven rebounds coming on the offensive end.

Three other players scored double digit points including 13 from Promise Amukamara in the historic win for Africa’s Champions.

On the other hand, the continent’s most successful team at the Nations Championship Senegal missed out on progressing to the knockout stage.

Senegal lost 48-63 to host nation Spain to exit the competition with just a win via a 70-69 thrilling matchup against Latvia.

Nigeria takes on defending champions USA on Friday September 28 in the first quarterfinal match.
