Senegal has secured its first win in the 2018 Women’s World Cup taking place in Tenerife, Spain after beating Latvia 70-69 over the weekend.

The second round of games proved to be an excellent run for Africa as Nigeria-the continent’s rep aside Senegal- beat Turkey 74-68 for its first ever win at the world event.

Unlike the opening game loss to USA, Senegal’s main scorer Astou Traore had enough help from members of the team to see out the win.

Traore led the West African nation with 19 points with Maimouna Diarra scoring 14 points and Khairy Sarr adding 11 points.

Latvia had four players score double digit points including Kristine Vitola’s team leading 14 points as the Europeans fell to a second straight loss.

The win gives Senegal a big chance to progress to the quarterfinals as it prepares to take on China in the final group game.

China lost 88-100 to USA and sits in second place in Group D ahead of Senegal on goal difference. USA has progressed to the quarterfinal.
