African Champions Nigeria has recorded its first win at the FIBA Women’s World Cup after grabbing a 74-68 win over Turkey over the weekend.

The win comes in Nigeria’s maiden participation in the world event since 2006 and marked a good round for the continent as Senegal-Africa’s other representative-scored a 70-69 win over Latvia.

After 68-86 to Australia in the first game, Nigeria came out stronger in the second game to beat the European powerhouse.

D’Tigress was led by Sarah Okoge who scored 22 points by converting four of eight three point attempts in the game.

Evelyn Akhator who scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win aided Nigeria’s victory which boosts its chances of progressing from Group B.

Turkey’s Isil Alben, Quanitra Hollingsworth and Cakir Turgut led the team’s offense with Alben producing 15 points and three rebounds.

Nigeria takes on Argentina needing a win to qualify. Argentina is yet to win a game after losing 43-84 to Australia who have qualified to the quarterfinals.
