Africa’s representatives at the FIBA Women’s World Cup Senegal and Nigeria are in for tough matchups in the opening round.
This year’s World Cup tips off tomorrow at Tenerife, Spain with 16 nations battling to win the coveted trophy; USA are defending champions.
However, for Africa’s reps, the journey gets off to a very difficult start as they have been paired in respective fixtures against USA and Australia.
In Group B, African Champions Nigeria takes on former Bronze medal winners Australia tomorrow before matchups against Argentina and European powerhouse Turkey.
In Group D, Senegal plays five times Champions USA tomorrow before taking on Latvia and China; Senegal are record continental winners with 11 African titles to its credit.
This year’s World Cup is scheduled to end on September 30 and Africa’s reps will be hoping to qualify to the latter stages for the first time.
This is Nigeria’s first trip to the world event since 2006 and with a wealth of foreign based players, D’Tigress are confident of making major improvements.
