Ghanaian Italian Small Forward Awudu Abass produced five points in Italy’s 69-63 win over Hungary in the European qualifiers for the 2019 FIBA World Cup to be held in China.

Abass added two rebounds and a steal in 18 minutes off the Azzurri’s bench for Italy’s latest win in the qualifiers. Greece, Germany and Czech Republic and Lithuania clinched spots in China in the round.

Hungary’s David Vojvoda top scored in the game with 25 points with Italy’s Luigi Datome registering 18 points in the low scoring game.

Italy is two points behind already qualified Lithuania who have 16 points in Group J of the European qualifiers and another win could be enough to clinch a spot in China.

Abass found playing time hard to come by in the latest round of qualifiers as he played just 10 minutes in Italy’s game against Poland.

Born to a Ghanaian father in Italy, Abass opted to play for the country of his birth over Ghana and has represented Italy at the juvenile level.
