This year’s FIBA World Under 17 Women’s World Cup has tipped off with China and Mali facing off in the opening game earlier today.
The West African nation lost 49-69 to the Asian powerhouse to get the tournament off to a thrilling start in Group A.
The competition is being hosted in Minsk, Belarus and is set to end on Sunday July 29; Minsk’s Falcon Palace and Sports Palace are the host venues.
Spain and New Zealand played the second game of the tournament and Spain run out as convincing winners courtesy an 83-48 win.
The competition features 16 teams from several zones in the world with four in each group; there are four groups at the preliminary stage.
Eight games will be played from today till July 26 for a rest day before the knockout phase commences. Africa’s other competitor, Angola, will play against Australia at 20:00 GMT.
Tournament favorite USA is in action against Italy as the time of writing.
