Ghana Wheelchair Basketball Federation General Secretary Wilson Agbasi has highlighted the high cost of providing wheelchairs for disabled basketball players.

In an interview on morning show “Head Start” on Ghana channel Kwese Free Sports, he revealed the cost of one wheelchair cost $5000 or GHC 23,000.

The staggering amount however falls way short of what athletes in other countries like the United States are given which cost up to $15,000.

Given the poor financial state of the Federation, providing each player with a $5000 wheelchair makes it impossible to meet such needs.

Aside facing extreme difficulty raising enough funds to cater to the logistical needs, the Federation has challenges honoring competitions outside the borders of the West African nation.

Over the past couple of years, Ghana’s National Team-Black Chariots-has consistently missed out on such events including the 2017 Africa Championship.

In the interview, Agbasi touched on the inauguration of Greater Accra’s Wheelchair basketball association and preparations for the upcoming National Republic Day Cup to be staged in Ho on July 1.
