The 2018 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship has ended with University of Ghana (UG) winning a third straight title.
UG’s record setting win came courtesy a 41-36 win over bitter rival Accra Technical University (ATU) in the fifth edition’s final game.
Losing to UG for the second time in the UPAC Final cost ATU a big slice of history its nemesis is enjoying at the moment with the historic title count.
However, Accra Technical had the title in its court halfway through the final as the Tudu based institution held a 27-20 first half lead.
With a perfect blend of experienced players including 2015 and 2016 Ghana Basketball Awards Most Valuable Players Abdul Mutaleeb Alhassan and Suleman Abubakar and young guards like Frederick Adu Twum, ATU looked poised to clinch this year’s title.
Conversely, turnovers and ill advised shots cost the side in the second half as UG rallied to end the third quarter tied on 31 before stealing the five point win in the fourth quarter.
ATU will be ruing several missed opportunities to write its name in history.
