The 2018 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship has ended with University of Ghana (UG) winning a third straight title.
UG’s record setting win came courtesy a 41-36 win over bitter rival Accra Technical University (ATU) in the fifth edition’s final game.
On the road to victory, UG crossed paths with University of Education-Winneba (UEW) and delivered a 66-48 win in the semifinals.
UEW recovered to beat Takoradi Technical University 46-35 to clinch bronze in the competition; placing third marked a big return to the elite stages of UPAC for UEW.
After falling in the final game in 2011 to Accra Technical University, UEW consistently missed out on progressing from the preliminary stage to the knockout stage prior to this year’s competition.
The team marked its return with a 28-49 loss to Accra Technical in a rematch of the 2011 Final but did well to beat All Nations University College 8052 and Sunyani Technical University 61-33.
Scoring 82 was the highest mark set in the 2018 edition’s knockout phase; the overall mark was set by Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s 100 point win at the preliminary stage over Garden City University College.
