University of Ghana (UG) Male Basketball Team has won the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship for a record third time in the history of the competition.
UG chalked the historic mark by beating Accra Technical University (ATU) 41-36 in the final game of the 2018 UPAC Championship; the matchup was a rematch of the 2016 Final game.
The win means UG is the most successful team in Ghana’s most celebrated tertiary basketball competition with its trio of wins.
The physical narure of the game played a role in the low score with the first quarter ending 15-14 for University of Ghana.
After tying the score at 17, Accra Technical Guard Ibrahim Razak got his side in the lead with a jump shot to spark his side to a 27-20 first half lead.
However, ATU’s lead was short lived as UG Shooting Guard Emmanuel Wolff scored four points in the early minutes of the third quarter.
With the score tied at 31, Guard Kwame Opoku put his side in the lead with a nifty finish around the basket on a beautiful drive.
He added a jump shot to give UG a 36-31 lead; the five point lead was maintained to clinch the famous win. Wolff and Opku shared the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament Award.
