Defending Champions of the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship University of Ghana (UG) have clinched a win in the opening game of the 2018 quarterfinals.
UG beat Ghana Technology University College (GTUC) 49-29 to take a big step to progress from the tough Group A.
The competitive tie had debutants GTUC compete very well with Emmanuel Acquaye delivering a highlight block in an attempt to will his side to overturn a seven point first half deficit.
With UG holding a 24-17 lead heading to the third quarter, the host team who double as a two time champion peeled away from GTUC.
This is GTUC’s first time competing in the quarterfinals and got punished by the experienced UG side on turnovers and offensive rebounds.
UG stretched its lead to 14 points (38-24) at the end of the third before wrapping things down the stretch for its first win of the knockout phase.
UG next plays Takoradi Technical University and GTUC take on Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
