February 18, 2017 marked a dark spot in Ghana’s basketball fraternity as legendary figure Matthias Ocloo passed away after battling illness for an extensive period.
Ocloo passed away after playing key roles in developing basketball in the West African country widely recognized for its football exploits.
However, his dedication to the sport sparked a growth in his capacity as coach, league administrator and national team manager.
His last coaching stint was with former Sprite Ball Champions St. Mary’s Senior High School in the January 2016 edition of the Championship.
Ocloo also headed the technical committee of the competition which is celebrated as Ghana’s biggest basketball competition.
As one of the founding fathers of the Accra Basketball League-Ghana’s premier club competition-Ocloo laid the foundation for honing talent for the national male and female teams.
Popularly known as “Mr. Matthias”, he was the recipient of the Dedication and Valor Award at the 2013 Ghana Basketball Awards.
He is well noted for his contribution to developing female players in the country.
