Nigeria Women’s National Basketball Team Point Guard Ezinne Kalu has stated her side has a big chance of qualifying out of the preliminary stage.
The D’Tigress have been drawn in Group B alongside Turkey, Australia and Argentina in a tough field with Australia winning bronze at the last World Cup held in 2014 with Turkey placing fourth in the competition.
The draw was conducted on Tuesday February 6 in Tenerife, Spain; this year’s World competition will be held in the Iberian nation from September 22-30.
After capturing its third FIBA Women’s African Championship (AfroBasket) last year courtesy a win over Senegal, Kalu believes the team is poised for big things in Spain.
“It’s a tough group but I think we have a great chance at making it to the next round. We have played against Turkey so we know what to expect…We have seen Argentina play. However, we haven’t seen Australia play. Bottom line, I think we have a big chance” she said.
Nigeria is yet to win a game at the World Cup which it last qualified to in 2006.
