Pope John Senior High School and Junior Seminary has won this year’s Eastern Regional basketball qualifiers.
The team beat rival Koforidua Senior High Technical School (KSTS) 31-30 in the final game to lift the title and secure progression to the national championship (Sprite Ball).
KSTS joins Pope John as regional reps by playing in the finals which it narrowly lost after impressing in prior stages of the competition including a 31-6 win over St. Paul’s in the semifinals.
Beating KSTS by a point was the second time in as many games for Pope John who recorded a similar score in the semifinal.
The team piped St. Peter’s Senior High School 14-13 in a closely contested matchup and repeated it in the final against KSTS.
Coach James Okine was full of praise for his side after the win but acknowledged the quality of KSTS stating, “I would like to use this opportunity to recognize their (KSTS) great efforts in the finals but beating POJOSS will be a tough thing for them to do again”.
Pope John placed fourth at the last national championships.
