The opening round of the 2017-2018 Global Sporting Platform (GSP) Basketball League had two big names missing from the list of teams that competed.

Sunyani Technical University (STU) and West Siders Basketball Teams did not feature in games played at the Eusbett Court in Sunyani.

Both teams missed out on registering in time to play in this year’s competition despite being handed an extended period to meet league requirements.

Neither side has missed games since the league began in the 2015-2016 season but is set to do so this season.

Tertiary side STU has used competition in the league’s first half as preparations for the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship the past couple of years.

However, the team will miss out on the division’s competition after finishing in the lower spots in the last campaign.

Fellow tertiary side University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) won the competition last season and got its title defense underway with a 35-17 win over Desert Rabbits.

Barracks Scorpions beat CUCG Saints 46-14 and Suncity Braves piped LIR 41-39.
