Nigeria National Male Basketball Team Head Coach Alex Nwora has stated Africa has the potential to be the hub of big basketball nations suggesting grassroots development is the way to go.
In an interview with FIBA.com after leading D’Tigers to win silver at the just ended 2017 African Nations Championship (AfroBasket), the former Cape Verde head trainer was adamant the continent has the immense potential to reach such heights.
“Africa is blessed with raw talents but these talents can only be properly harnessed through an holistic grassroots program so that players would be through the basics of the game before going abroad… My experience working with two different national teams [Cape Verde and Nigeria] at FIBA AfroBasket gives me a lot of insight that Africa is the next destination of big basketball nations” he said.
Nwora was appointed as Nigeria prior to this year’s tournament which was co hosted by Senegal and Tunisia. Senegal placed third with Tunisia winning its second gold medal at the competition.
Nigeria missed out on second straight title after winning gold in 2015.
