FIBA Africa President Hamane Niang has wished Nigeria and Senegal well ahead of next year’s World Cup tournament to be held in Spain.
The 2018 World Cup will be held in the Iberian nation from September 22-30 and have 16 teams battle for the world title.
West African nations Senegal and Nigeria will represent Africa after playing in the just ended Women’s African Nations Championship (AfroBasket) in Bamako, Mali.
After witnessing defending champions Senegal lost its crown to Nigeria following a 45-68 loss in the final, President Niang opined he was impressed by the level of development in women’s basketball on the continent and wished both representatives well with little over a year to the competition.
“This is also the opportunity for me to congratulate Nigeria for winning a third continental title and Senegal and Mali for finishing second and third respectively. Nigeria and Senegal will represent Africa at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup…I wish them all the best and much success” he said to FIBA.com
Olympic Champions USA, Canada and Argentina have qualified to the competition.
