Central African Republic (CAR) has booked a place in the 2017 FIBA Africa Basketball Championship which takes place later this year after beating Chad 67-64 in Bamako, Mali over the weekend.

The side automatically clinched a spot in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers set to commence on November 24.

After sealing its place in the continental Championship, CAR has been drawn in Group D of the World Cup qualifiers later this year.

The team’s path to China rests on how it performs against Senegal, Mozambique and Ivory Coastwho are housed in the Group.

The Republic’s has a long winding and eventful qualification to the AfroBasket after missing out at the first instance in Zone 4’s Group 2. Democratic Republic of Congo qualified ahead of the side.

CAR also missed out on Wild Card selections to the Championship to Rwanda and Guinea before finally clinching the prestigious spot by topping in a specially arranged qualification phase.

CAR beat Chad and Zimbabwe to it in the Malian capital.
