One night after winning an exciting Game 7 over the Washington Wizards to advance to the Eastern Conference finals, the Boston Celtics had their dream come true, as they won the 2017 NBA Draft Lottery, giving them the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft on June 22.
Owning the first pick, while also having a team competitive enough to win the No. 1 seed in the East and the Eastern Conference finals, gives the Celtics plenty of options this offseason. But according to Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck, the team already seems set on what to do with that prized pick.
“I would imagine we would probably make the pick,” Grousbeck said the morning after the lottery.
“We’ve got plenty of time to decide what to do, but I would imagine we would probably make the pick. In today’s NBA, picks are very valuable. You have a young person that you can really help mold and grow with. Bring him in before the max salaries kick in. It makes a lot of sense to keep these picks.”
Though there is plenty of posturing around the draft, keeping the pick certainly makes plenty of sense for the Celtics, even if the projected No. 1 pick, Markelle Fultz, is a point guard — the same position as current Celtics star Isaiah Thomas.
