The only game played in the women’s division of the Accra Basketball League has lived up to expectation with Fire Service inking a close win over Ghana Navy at the Lebanon House Court.
Fire beat Navy 53-51 fighting back on several occasions in the game to deliver a stunning win over the 2017 season surprise package.
Trailing 5-11 at the end of the first quarter, Fire’s effort amounted to little on the score board as the side’s deficit increased to nine at the end of the first half (17-26).
Forward Theresa Dodoo scored six points completing a three point play and scoring from the arc but the efforts of Grace Yinamyah and Felicia Martey on the offensive end neutralized the threat.
The quarter ended on a buzzer beating note as Fire Point Guard Carlyn Adjei scored a running layup.
Navy’s second capitulation continued for the second straight week as the side largely underperformed in the second half as Fire cut Navy’s lead down to six (43-37) at the end of the quarter.
The sole highlight play from Navy came when Guard Maria Mensah fed Memuna Mumuni in the paint to score an uncontested layup.
Navy’s poor showing down the stretch continued as Fire closed the gap to two (43-45) on the back off a deep three point shot from Adjei with five minutes left to play. Navy fought back and with 2:25 left to play, the game was tied at 49 before Fire took the lead.
Navy’s Yinamyah scored on a drive but her efforts proved too little too late as Fire walked away with the crucial victory.
The game between Braves of Customs and University of Ghana did not take place.
