The evolving events leading up to this year’s Africa Basketball Championship (AfroBasket) have evolved further with reports seeping in regarding Angola’s indecisiveness to host the 2017 edition of the Championship.
Basketballghana.com gathers, the central African country’s upcoming elections is a major factor which was neglected by FIBA Africa before naming Angola as host of the tournament following Republicof Congo’s withdrawal as host.
Speaking to ANGOP.ao, Angolan Basketball Federation Secretary General Nelson Sardinha said:
“”We received the proposal to respond within 10 days, since we would have to present the proposal to the State, but given the circumstance and with some optimism, they put the information on the site as if it were confirmed”.
“We brought the proposal, presented it to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and it was rejected. We then notified FIBA presenting the position of the state”.
Congo was to host AfroBasket between August 19-30 but pulled out citing logistical reasons before FIBA Africa confirmed Angola as new host at Congress held last month in Bamako, Mali.
