Accra Technical University (ATU) has won the opening game of the 2017 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship Zone E by beating Wisconsin International University College 39-21.
The two time winners parading 2015 and 2016 Ghana Basketball Most Valuable Player Award winners Abdul Mutaleeb Alhassan and Suleman Abubakar, barely hit the next gear as very little effort was required in the win.
In spite of the loss, Wisconsin played above themselves to give the competition’s record winners fits in short spurts with a sleek combination of ball movement and clinical finishing in the paint.
ATU lead from the game’s start to finish with a 28-16 after the first half and upped the activity on defense to hold Wisconsin to score just three points in the third quarter.
The win gives the host institution a victorious start to recapture the title it lost to University of Ghana (UG) in 2016.
ATU lost 44-45 to UG in an epic final.
