Reigning Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship University of Ghana (UG) has begun this year’s edition with a 29-20 win over Blue Crest University College in Zone D.
The opening game of the zone started off an expected note with UG taking a seven point lead in the opening minutes. However, Blue Crest slowly warmed itself into the game and showed why it was one of the surprise packages in last year’s championship.
A pair of three point shots got the side back into the game finishing the first half trailing 8-15. Matters remained close heading to the final quarter as UG continued to miss shots highlighted by veteran Guard Joshua Akai’s missed layup from blank range.
However, the champions did just enough to score the win and get its latest competition underway on a winning note.
Marshalls University College beat Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) 36-18 in Zone A which is taking place simultaneously. Last year’s quarter finalist had no problems dispensing the win over a poor GIMPA side.
