The Accra Basketball League (ABL) new season has started off with a bang as Tudu Galaxy beat defending champions Braves of Customs 31-29 in the opening game of the new campaign played at the Lebanon House Court in Tudu.
The home side buoyed by a partisan fan base rallied late with the help of back to back three point shots in the fourth quarter to pull off the surprise result.
Braves paced the game for long stretches before a collapse with few minutes left to play saw the defending champs piss away the lead.
Trailing 12-18 in the first half, Galaxy got off to a quick start in the second with four straight points but a Matilda Gordon jumper put Braves on 20 points. Braves looked comfortable cruising to a 25-18 third quarter lead but got pegged back by Tudu’s clutch shooting down the stretch.
Braves won all games in the division last season to lift the title but has lost one already on opening day. Galaxy on the hand celebrated the huge win after featuring just six players for the game.
In the day’s other game, Ghana Navy bullied a spirited University of Ghana (UG) side into submission by beating them 41-27.
A minute silence was observed in honor of deceased league administrator Benjamin Baafi.
