The 2017 Accra Basketball League (ABL) 2017 has tipped off with games between Braves of Customs and Tudu Galaxy and University of Ghana (UG) and Ghana Navy opening the season at the Lebanon House.
Prior to the start of the first game of the season, a minute silence was observed for former league administrator Benjamin Baafi who passed away on March 1.
The 54 year old died after battling a protracted illness since the final quarter of 2016.
On the court, defending Champions Braves got shocked by a late Galaxy tirade as the latter side went on a late run to win the tie 31-29.
The result was more shocking considering the Tudu side had just six players available for the game.
Braves did not lose a game last season as it swept all before them for another league title.
The following game had Navy beat UG 41-26 in a game that was barely close; the win was a bit of a surprise since Navy won just a game last season.
This year’s competition has five teams competing in the division
