Ghana Basketball Association (GBBA) has issued a press release following the sudden demise of long serving Administrator, Coach and Referee Matthias Ocloo. In a letter signed by GBBA Chairman David Addo Ashong, lamented the veteran basketball lifer’s shock loss to the fraternity.

Aside coaching Ghana’s Female National Team, Ocloo was at the helm of St. Mary’s Senior High School, CYO Basketball Club and St. Joseph’s Junior High School basketball programs. Prior to his death, he was the Acting Chairman of Ghana Basketball Referees Association.

ACCRA, February 16, 2017: The Ghana Basketball Association has received
with profound sorrow news of the death of Mr. Mathias Ocloo. Mr. Ocloo aged
70, passed away at his residence in Dome on Thursday, 16th February, 2017 at
5:00am.

He was recovering from an illness he had been battling for the past
couple of months up until his demise.

Mr. Ocloo was an iconic figure in basketball in Ghana and was indeed one of the
pillars on which the game was built and continues to grow in Ghana today. At the
time of his passing he was serving as the Acting Chairman of the Ghana
Basketball Referees Association as well as the coach of St. Joseph’s CYO
Basketball and of St. Mary’s High School in Accra.

In addition to this, hepreviously coached the Senior Women’s National Basketball Team. He was also a Team Manager for the National Teams.
He won the award for dedication and valour in 2013 at the Ghana Basketball
Awards.

The Ghana Basketball Association shares its prayers and thoughts with his family
at this difficult time.
