Host University of Cape-Coast (UCC) has lost its opening game of the Seventh Mini GUSA Games Basketball competition after the side lost 68-72 to University of Education-Winneba (UEW) at UCC’s impressive gymnasium.
The loss comes as a big blow to the title ambitions of the host institution in what is the tougher of two groups in the competition. Heading into the game, both teams played friendly ties against Accra-based Icons Basketball Club with both tertiary teams losing.
UCC lost 60-67 as UEW lost 91-92.
In the other Group B game on Day One, University of Professional Studies (UPSA) lost 48-54 to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
KNUST will be in the hunt for a second straight win as it takes on UEW at 16:00 GMT today before a crucial game between UCC and UPSA takes place at 18:30 GMT.
University of Ghana plays its first game of the tournament against UDS at 17:30 GMT.
The sole fixture of the round had University of Development Studies (UDS) beat University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) 46-44.
