DSC_0230AMASS suffered a shock semifinal loss to Accra Wesley Girls at 2016 Sprite Ball.

T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School’s (AMASS) male side’s failure to make it to Ghana’s national basketball championship-the Sprite Ball Championship- hardly gathers any headlines but the dwindling fortunes of its female colleagues has caught the eye for the wrong reasons.

The side burst onto the national scene after surprisingly qualifying as regional champions before doing the unthinkable by going all the way to win the national championship in 2014. The side repeated the impressive feat by defending its title the following year.

However, the 2016 edition had the side lose in the semis to novice Accra Wesley Girls High School before piping regional rivals Kumasi Girls Senior High School to claim bronze in a repeat of the Ashanti Regional Basketball Championship.

All suspicions of a falling trend were confirmed over the weekend as the side fell to Kumasi Girls 9-3 in the final game to have its three year reign atop the girls’ game ended in the most underwhelming fashion put up by AMASS.

The warning signs showed in the opening games against the likes of Islamic Senior High School as AMASS struggled to impose its’ usually dominant style of play on the rounds before completely succumbing to the inspired Kumasi Girls side.

With little under two months left to prepare prior to Sprite Ball 2017 tip off, AMASS will have to dig deep to turnaround the falling standards of the side in recent memory.
