The Ashanti Regional Basketball Championship has successfully ended with Opoku Ware School and Kumasi Girls High School winning the boys and girls category respectively. This year’s games were hosted by Opoku Ware after Toase Senior High School hosted last year’s edition.
Despite both schools beating arch rivals Prempeh College and T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School to claim first place in the respective divisions, neither school experienced the same fortunes as the other.
For Opoku Ware, beating Prempeh College 27-26 in an intense and closely contested game, was simply a repeat of last year’s final result that had the former top the latter to emerge champions of the region and secure a seeding spot at the main championship-Sprite Ball Championship-draw.
For Kumasi Girls, beating AMASS 9-3 was the completion of a yearlong path to redemption for the side who have easily stamped its name as the next frontier to challenge the supremacy of the top schools in the female division.
Following last year’s loss to AMASS in the same division, Kumasi Girls got revenge eclipsing the efforts of AMASS with a well coordinated game plan that had last year’s winning side turnover possession on many occasions due to a smothering defense deployed by Kumasi Girls.
All finalists will represent the region in January 2017 at Sprite Ball.
