You may end up eating humble pie if you underestimate the prospect of schools in the Brong Ahafo region as they make their much anticipated debut appearance in the prestigious basketball championship.

And that why I will not be in a haste to brush aside their ability to sell a good game on Friday at the Sunyani Senior high School.

From all indications and from what I’ve managed to gather over the past few weeks, the Brong Ahafo region has harnessed some really great basketball talent over the years and they will be keen to continue in that positive track as sixteen schools gather their loins for the 2010 Sprite Ball Championship.

I vividly remember the level of play of schools in the Volta, Western and Ashanti regions especially when they took part in the competition for the first time. Their display was particularly not first-rate. It could best be described as a somewhat mushrooming performance from the young players as they exhibited skills to their best of their abilities.

Clearly they lacked some basic seeds of the game and rightly so because they were playing at a ‘higher’ platform and therefore they need to raise the bar. They showcased some trait of brilliance on the court even though they didn’t score full marks.

But two years down the line and I will be almost safe to say that they’ve become a force to reckon with where they’ve shown so much promise and dexterity on the court- earning rave reviews on the local media. The dream to develop and promote the game has given credence to the fact that hard work pays.

That’s why I will not be even be tempted to question the ability of schools like  Twene Amanfo Technical, St James Seminary, Berekum Presby Senior High, Dormaa Senior High, Wenchi and Techiman senior high among others that are expected to participate in the championship on Friday.

We’ll need to keep our finger cross and wait to find out what happens at the Sunyani Senior High basketball court on Friday.
