After three hours and 45 minutes of deliberations, a jury in Los Angeles found Derrick Rose not liable in his civil sexual assault case on Wednesday afternoon, per the New York Post’s Julia Marsh.
The New York Knicks guard was accused of gang raping a woman while she was unconscious at her apartment in Los Angeles on Aug. 27, 2013, with two of his friends, Randall Hampton and Ryan Allen. The three men have been cleared of all charges.
From Deadspin’s Diana Moskovitz:
Rose was mostly emotionless as the not-liable verdicts were read on claims including sexual battery, battery, trespassing, conspiracy, gender violence and emotional distress, staring at his hands during the reading and closing his eyes and tilting his head back once it was over. Jane Doe had her head in her hands through the whole reading.
The trial had stretched out over more than two weeks in the downtown federal courthouse in Los Angeles, culminating in closing arguments in which each side accused the other of being liars. Jane Doe’s lawyer, Waukeen McCoy, said his client was being slut shamed. Rose’s lawyer, Mark Baute, said his client was the victim of stereotypes of black men.
All along, Rose and his two friends maintained their innocence, testifying that they went to the accuser’s apartment and had consensual sex with her. The accuser testified that she was unconscious and could not have consented.
Rose played one game for the Knicks in the preseason and is not expected to play in any more.
