The Sacramento Kings will meet with point guard Ty Lawson after he reportedly showed up late to a shootaround earlier in the week and missed a team flight to Kentucky, according to ESPN.com’s Marc Stein.
Sources told Stein that Lawson “faces an uncertain future” in Sacramento.
Lawson’s career has taken a nosedive since the 2014-15 season, when he averaged 15.2 points and a career-high 9.6 assists.
In July 2015, he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. It was the fourth such occurrence dating back to his time with the North Carolina Tar Heels. He entered a 30-day treatment program following the arrest.
Shortly thereafter, the Nuggets traded Lawson to the Houston Rockets, where his time with the team was a disaster. The 28-year-old averaged 5.8 points and 3.4 assists per game, and the Rockets had a minus-8.1 net rating when he was on the floor, per NBA.com.
The Rockets bought out his contract, and he finished the 2015-16 season with the Indiana Pacers.
The Kings signed him in August. With Darren Collison suspended for the first eight games of the regular season, Sacramento likely envisioned he would play significant minutes to start the year.
However, Lawson’s recent infractions could jeopardize his future with the team. Basketball Insiders’ Alex Kennedy noted that none of Lawson’s contract is guaranteed, so the Kings wouldn’t incur any financial hit if they released him.
In the event Sacramento offloaded the eighth-year guard, Jordan Farmar or Isaiah Cousins would likely take over at the point until Collison returns. While not a natural point guard, Garrett Temple could fill in as well.
