University of Ghana (UG) Male Basketball Team Point Guard Joel Kwame Opoku has stated excelling on defense was the difference maker in his side’s stunning trophy sweep in the year where UG was adjudged Team of the Year at the Ghana Basketball Awards.

The team capped off a stunning year by winning the All Africa University Games in South Africa after winning the GUSA (Ghana Universities Sports Association) and UPAC (Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges) basketball tournaments.

Speaking in an extensive interview with Ghanafans.com, Opoku reiterated playing hard defense catapulted the side to the top only a year after failing to qualify from the group stage at the 2015 UPAC Championship.

“From GUSA to South Africa, It was the same approach which was defense. The team believes in defense and we go by the saying “Defense win championships” We take the game from the opponent and make it count on the other side” he said.

The former Under-18 National Team and Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (PRESEC-Legon) player also took time to praise coaches who helped shape his basketball career including National Team Coach Lawal Brimah, PRESC Coach Michael Davis and UG Coach Meme Falconer.

Opoku recently led Asylum Down and Ridge to capture the maiden Peace Hoops Tournament.
