The name of University of Ghana (UG) has been raised high following a spectacular showing in 2016 according to the lead representative of the institution’s Sports Directorate Henry Nii Sackey who also notes “things have been different”.
He made the statement when Ghana’s leading hoops portal Basketballghana.com made a stop at the University to inquire about the progress of the institution’s basketball league which will have the first round end later this month.
“Things have been different. You know, the name of the University of Ghana in basketball has been raised high across Africa and across the world am very sure and this has whipped up enthusiasm among players.”
“I must say that thanks to the performance of the UG team in South Africa GUSA (Ghana Universities Sports Association) at the moment, is considering taking basketball to the World University Games” he said.
He later reiterated the team is set to be augmented by top players from other tertiary institutions in January to build a formidable team for the world games which will take place in Taipei, Taiwan.
UG’s Male team has dominated the Ghanaian scene in 2016 after winning the GUSA, UPAC (Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges) basketball events before winning the All Africa University Games in South Africa.
Members of the team including Power Forward Maxwell Mod earned titles at the Ghana Basketball Awards.
