Accra Basketball League (ABL) Women’s Division Champions Braves of Customs is set to represent Ghana in the upcoming FIBA Africa Zone Three Championship later in October.
The side earned the right to compete in the qualifiers due to be held in Togo’s capital Lome between October 21 and October 30 after going unbeaten in the just ended six team league.
The competition is one of the qualifiers to the main African Club Championship this year and will have representatives from some West African countries including Liberia, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Niger compete.
Power house Nigeria will be represented at the tournament by 2011 finalists First Bank and Dolphins after earning top honors in the league.
Braves of Customs won the 2016 Accra Basketball League by gaining maximum points after blitzing all opponents in the league. The side is well stocked in every position including 2016 Ghana Basketball Awards double winner Matilda Gordon. Gordon was named Most Valuable Female Player of the Year and Tertiary Female Player of the Year.
Ghana is yet to make a major statement in the championship whereas clubs from Angola have dominated the competition. Last year’s final featured two Angolan sides Primeiro do Agosto and Interclube with the former winning 69-53.
