Kumasi Select side’s Abdul Bashir and Maria Mensah from Ghana Navy have been crowned Male and Female Most Valuable Player of the 2016 After7 Cowbell Fetu Afahy3 Basketball Tournament respectively.
The duo were awarded for their exceptional showing in the competition as they guided their respective sides to medal wins with Bashir’s Kumasi side falling only to Accra in the final games, to miss out on a gold medal.
Kumasi lost 17-23 to Accra in a low scoring game that was for major stretches, low on quality but high on excessive fouling and aggressive play. Bashir’s blend of power and fluidity made him a handful for opponents as the big man could bang his way in the paint or step out further from the basket to sink a long jump shot or three point shot.
Mensah on the other hand, secured a silver medal for Ghana Navy by controlling the reins of the side at the Point position. Aside her graceful movement on and off the ball, Mensah proved to be more than a facilitator but one who can easily fit the bill as a finisher on the court.
On her part, Mensah was grateful for the recognition but admitted her award was “unexpected”.
