Greater Accra Region’ select side has been crowned champions of the 2016 After7 Cowbell Basketball Tournament held at the Cape-Coast Sports Stadium by beating a select side from Kumasi 23-17 in the final game.
The win ensures Accra unbeaten streak in the two day tournament remain intact in what proved to be a very cagey and physical battle between Ghana’s top leading basketball hubs. Emmanuel Amoako got his side off to the perfect start by draining a deep three point shot early in the game.
However, what promised to be a display of “beautiful” basketball, turned into a full on slug war between the sides that had referees on the day expending lots of energy calling fouls and getting tempers down. Leader for Kumasi, Reagan Sarpong and Most Valuable Player of the Tournament Abdul Bashir could not erase the six point deficit in a frantic end to the game to see rivals Accra lift the trophy.
Reformers of Prisons won the second runner up spot after recording a 34-33 win over Ho in a game that lacked much spark compared to prior games both sides featured in during the competition. Having missed the ultimate spot, young frontcourt stalwart Samuel Odamtten saw extended minutes on the court as his side did just enough to claim bronze.
