Nungua Coldstore and Community 4 played out an entertaining game in the latest round of the Tema Community Basketball League. The burgeoning league with a seven team roster, had Community 5 beat out Community 12 32-29 before Nungua and Community 4 dueled.
Nungua made a strong start with Power Forward Kwame Boamah Djan scoring on multiple offensive rebounds and three blocks to power his side to lead 23-12 after the first quarter. The home side (Community 4) fared better in the opening minutes of the second quarter as they raced into a 6-0 run but Nungua responded in time to lead 32-24 at the end of the first half.
Missing Point Guard Kent Fosu through an ankle injury, Community 4 struggled to penetrate the opposing side’s defense much. Fosu, nailed a late three point shot just inside the center circle in the previous round to give his side a win but was vociferous on the sideline to spur his side into contention.
University of Energy and Natural Resources Center Benjamin Quarshie tied the score at 49 with few minutes to go but a costly turnover by Guard Bryan gave Nungua the last possession of the game. 2016 Referee of the Year Gasu Quarmyne earned his stripes by calling for a foul on Boamah just before the final whistle sounded.
Boamah converted to give Nungua a slim 54-53 win.
