Ghana’s King of Comedy DKB real name Derrick Kobina Bonney has stated his reasons for ditching basketball after delivering another outstanding performance at the 2016 Ghana Basketball Awards at the Best Western Premier Hotel.
Speaking to Basketballghana.com in the aftermath of the Rite Sports Limited organized event, DKB satirically outlined obstacles limiting Ghana’s second most popular sport from reaching its apex saying:
“The reason why I retired early was because we were not getting per diem… you know the NBA stars like they have All-Star Weekend ,they give them free girls and there was nothing like that in Ghana and it was very depressing so me I stopped playing basketball”.
Getting more serious, he added, “I feel like it needs more attention… we need more and I don’t know how much the government is involved but whatever it is, sponsors or government, they need to be more involvement”.
“This program was perfect you can’t get it any better…the awards were awarded well. There was no controversy, no rigging, it was perfect and smooth”.
The 2016 Ghana Basketball Awards was the third edition of the prestigious event which honors stakeholders in basketball with the first edition taking place in 2013.
Suleman Abubakar and Matilda Gordon emerged Male and Female Most Valuable Player of the Year respectively.
