Global Sports Platforms (GSP) League Administrator Roland Diamond has noted the marked spike in interest in basketball by stating the game is being more appreciated. His made the statement in the aftermath of the 2016 Ghana Basketball Awards which took place at the Best Western Premier Hotel in the capital, Accra.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Basketballghana.com after the event, Roland was impressed with the turn out on the night and the commitment from stakeholders of the game.
“It’s quite encouraging and the turnout is also impressive, basically…what we see tonight is that people are beginning to appreciate basketball. If it (basketball) is being given strong financial support, moral support, I think Ghana is going to be one of the names to be reckoned with in the world”.
On the GSP League, he said, “ The individual contributions and support and sacrifice, we’ve grown to a point now that we have eight teams competing…we have people who are so determined to make it through basketball and this season is going to be great”.
He however conceded the league is in need of financial support and called on corporate bodies to help solve the issue. The league will recommence after a lengthy break following the first week of games which had defending champions Sun City Braves earn a win.
