Ghana’s premier Polytechnic Accra Polytechnic and premier University, University of Ghana (UG)emerged big winners at the 2016 Ghana Basketball Awards which took place on Friday August 12 at the Best Western premier Hotel in Accra, Ghana.
The prestigious annual event had Accra Polytechnic win multiple awards in several categories since the event’s inception in 2013. Frontcourt prowlers Suleman Abubakar and Matilda Gordon won the overall Male and Female Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Year respectively and Gordon added the Tertiary Female Player of the Year title.
The institution won the GHAPSA (Ghana Polytechnics Sports Association) Team of the Year in both male and female divisions.
However, Abubakar couldn’t replicate Gordon’s feat as he lost out on the Tertiary Male Player of the Year Award to Maxwell Mod of University of Ghana.
Aside Okuampah, Meme Falconer was adjudged Coach of the Year beating two time winner Brimah Lawal and Marshalls University College Coach James Okine.
Following a wonderful year where UG’s Male Basketball Team won three major championships including the All Africa University Games, the side was adjudged overall Team of the Year. It also won the GUSA (Ghana University Sports Association) and UPAC (Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges) Teams of the Year.
Sports Director of the institution Dr. Bello Bella Bitugu and some members of the team including Emmanuel Wolff and UPAC MVP Muhaimin Guba were present at the ceremony to receive the awards.
