Reports reaching Basketballghana.com indicate Accra Basketball League Men’s Division I leaders and defending champions Braves of Customs’ postponed matchup against Teshie Rangers is as a result of the 2016 Ghana Basketball Awards.
The heralded event takes place today at 18:00 GMT at the Best Western Premier Hotel in Accra and is set to be graced by a number of esteemed dignitaries including Ghana Sports Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye.
Due to Braves huge representation among personalities in line to be awarded, the league board has decided to postpone the game between the side and Teshie Rangers to enable nominees make it in time for the awards.
Suleman Abubakar, Hashim Brimah, Abdul Mutaleeb Alhassan and Coach Brimah Lawal have been nominated in several categories. Team Administrator Benjamin Baafi will be honored with a Dedication and Valor Award for his immense contribution to the development of basketball in Ghana.
However, remaining games on the scheduled list of fixtures will be honored as Reformers of Prisons will play Fire Service and DC Dynamics take on Air Force. A win for Dynamics all but keeps them in Division I whereas a loss for Air Force pretty much does the opposite.
Despite the awkward timing, Dynamics Coach Feranmi Olulonyo has stated “his side is ready to play and win the game”.
Today’s awards is the third edition since 2013 when organizers Rite Sports Limited introduced the scheme.
