Countdown to the maiden High Schools and Colleges Draft is on as the days and hours tick down to the event that offers scholarships for Ghana’s budding talents in basketball to high ranked educational institutions.

The historic event will take place at the El Wak Stadium in Accra between August 15 and August 19 and will have prospective student athletes go through several drills by technical heads.

As the list of institutions tabled to select athletes keeps growing, Basketballghana.com looks at some institutions on the program. At the tertiary level, reigning African, UPAC (Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges) Basketball Championship and GUSA (Ghana Universities Sports Association) Basketball Champions, University of Ghana are in for new talents to replace members of the legendary team.

Several members of the team have graduated including Point Guard Joshua Akai and reports gathered indicate the institution will be heavily involved in replenishing its’ roster with new faces and mount a strong defense of the titles won this year.

Having witnessed an embarrassing moment on its home court by failing to qualify out of the preliminary stage of the UPAC Championship and manage a bronze medal at the GUSA Championship, University of Cape-Coast is one of the institutions to look out for during the draft.

The likes of Steve Foster and veteran Mohammed Yakubu will need more help to climb back to the top and the draft is one way of doing so.

In Radford’s case coming up short against a well stocked Marshalls University College team in the final game of the Private Universities Sports Association Games (PUSAG) Basketball competition, the relatively unknown team made a statement.

Competing in the showcase with top notch discipline, earned the institution a nomination in the Clean Team of the Year Category in the upcoming Ghana Basketball Awards.

However, the team is aiming for much more than a silver medal and it intends to topple the big names by splashing into the talented pool of young athletes that could feature reigning Sprite Ball Most Valuable Player and 2016 Ghana Basketball Awards nominee Dennis Dugbenu.

The highly respected award scheme will take place on August 12 at the Best Western Premier Hotel in Accra.
