Holy Family ended a run of losses in the Accra Basketball League Men’s Division I by beating Air Force 56-53 to record its first win of the season. The hard fought win came on the back off Tema Youth’s 58-49 win over DC Dynamics in the opening game on the day.
Holy Family’s strong showing in the second quarter had the team rally from a 23-32 to tie the score at 33 with the crucial basket being converted by Bright Agebu on a runner. Eric Afful gave Family the game’s lead with a three point shot and benefited from a beautiful Raphael Buchag pass to score an uncontested layup.
Air Force bigs Benjamin Sowah and Sampson Annan got into the groove of things with timely baskets that threatened to halt Family’s run as Air Force trailed 51-54 with just over a minute to play. However, Captain James Pappoe scored for Family to seal victory.
Unlike previous games, Holy Family played more as a team than a collection of talented individuals which was a major reason behind the team’s winless run.
The team is still stuck at the base of the standings with seven points despite the win but it gives the team a chance to avoid the drop at the end of the season.
