General Manager of NBA outfit Toronto Raptors Masai Ujiri, is expected to headline a strong contingent of foreign dignitaries set to grace the 2016 Ghana Basketball Awards which takes place at the Best Western Premier Hotel in Ghana’s capital, Accra on August 12.
The Raptors Manager will be honored with a meritorious award for his contribution to developing basketball in Africa through his foundation, Giants of Africa.
Ujiri, a Nigerian native, started the non-profit organization in 2003 with an aim to provide access to elite coaching and facilities to young basketball players on the African continent. The program is responsible for getting over 80 African players enrolled in High Schools and Universities in the US.
The annual event is expected to also have some NBA players attend including Orlando Magic Power Forward Serge Ibaka and new Los Angeles Lakers Small Forward Luol Deng.
This year’s edition will be the third following successful outing s in 2013 and 2015 and is garnering huge interest due to several changes in voting where several sects including Coaches and captains of teams, some media personnel and the public’s vote will be factored.
Dennis Dugbenu of National Champions St. Augustine’s College has been shortlisted for the High School Male Player of the Year category alongside Kofi Aboagye Acheampong of Mfantsipim School and Emmanuel Agyapong of Opoku Ware School.
