University of Ghana’s (UG) Male Basketball Team spearheaded Ghana’s impressive performance at the just ended All Africa University Games held in Johannesburg, South Africa between June 26 and July 2.
UG’s team emerged victorious in the basketball competition after beating Midland State University from Zimbabwe 96-52 in the final game. The team beat out a competitive field that included University of Lusaka from Zambia and host institution University of Johannesburg.
UG’s win in the basketball competition pads a successful year for the team having already won gold in GUSA (Ghana Universities Sports Association) and UPAC (Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges) basketball competitions.
The team headlined a strong performance by the institution which produced five gold medals including basketball, eight silver medals and six bronze medals. University of Education-Winneba chipped in with a healthy haul of six gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals.
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology won gold in the men’s 4×100 relay race. All three Ghanaian representatives touched down in Ghana’s capital, Accra on Sunday.
The eight edition of the Games which is popularly known as FASU Games had 44 tertiary institutions from 14 countries in Africa compete in multiple sports disciplines including football, track and field, volleyball and table tennis.
