University of Ghana’s (UG) Basketball Team have made a thrilling start in the basketball competition of the All Africa University Games by beating University of Lusaka 63-41 in Johannesburg earlier today. UG will play Midlands State University later today.
The team who paced all tertiary institutions in Ghana to win both GUSA (Ghana Universities Sports Association) and UPAC (Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges) basketball competitions, lived up to their reputation as Ghana’s notable medal hopeful by dispatching the Zambians.
Playing on a chilly morning, UG began slowly but adapted quickly enough to get back in the game by taking the lead which proved crucial in deciding the game as the Zambians never quite figured out the fast running and high jumping Ghanaians.
Coach Meme Falconer, who arrived a day before the game following his visit to the Barclays Center in New York for the 2016 NBA Draft, issued out stern instructions from the bench when UG began to lose its way a bit in the third quarter.
UG is expected to end Ghana’s long medal drought in the Games. The competition’s 8th edition has multiple tertiary institutions in Africa compete in several sports disciplines including football, tennis and volleyball.
